BCA leverages IoT and data analytics tool to manage chiller plants in Singapore

The portal will oversee chiller plant performance and provide insights to help reduce the cost of energy across buildings.

The BCA (Building and Construction Authority) has partnered Microsoft to manage chiller plant efficiency in Singapore.

According to a press release, Microsoft provided the construction authority with a Chiller Efficiency Smart Portal that is powered by the Microsoft Azure cloud platform for the pilot project.

The project will complement BCA's Green Mark rating system for next-generation green buildings, and could potentially be part of Green Mark upon its completion in 2017.  The portal will be available to 30 commercial and institutional buildings over the next two years.

The portal will oversee chiller plant performance and provide insights to help reduce the cost of energy across buildings.

The plant performance data such as power, watch flow rate, and temperature will be recorded and reflected on the portal. Through machine learning abilities, the portal will detect those chiller plants which result in energy waste. Building managers will receive alerts via email or SMS with an updated report of the chiller plants. From there, building managers will be able to take necessary actions required to optimise chiller performance and save energy.

In addition, they will be given a full record on the performance of chiller plants across the building, enabling them to make quicker decisions and have a better insight on when to fix maintenance appointments with contractors.

"I foresee enthusiastic uptake of this Portal and hope that all users will turn the insights it provides into actions to optimise their chiller plant," said Kenny Low, Senior Facilities Supervisor at United World College South East Asia.

BCA utilises Green Mark to encourage owners to adopt environmental friendly measures to improve efficiency of buildings. The pilot project will be implemented in phases until end-2017.
