During Telekom Malaysia subsidiary Multimedia University's recent convocation in Cyberjaya, fresh graduates were advised to face the realities of today's working environment in a softening economy.
Pro-Chancellor of Multimedia University (MMU), Tan Sri Dato' Ir. Muhammad Radzi Mansor's remarks during the event included advice that "the scroll from the universities will only serve as an introducer to open doors and even serve as testament to some of the qualities the graduates might possessed."
"Once you are already inside the door, the nature of the workplace is that you must live up to the expectations of those who had let you in," said Radzi Mansor, whose message follows some surveys that suggested some fresh graduates were not ready to meet industry requirements.
"Corporations and businesses have their own speed cialised knowledge, and often specialised ways of conducting themselves," he said. "As such, whatever you have learned in university will not be enough. It could not be enough. You must be able to learn new knowledge, and adapt to the situation."
"The current economic situation has come to the point that the graduate often find that their job scope covering topics beyond their interest, he added."Yet, that is the reality that businesses are facing today. Employees often have to be more than what they were trained to do. The solution to this is again a willingness to learn and adapt."
