Australian govt eyes private sector access to national facial recognition service

"We're negotiating with the state and territory governments at the moment with a view to bringing them on," Rice said. "They probably won't come in in a big rush - they'll probably come in fits and starts," he added. "If we're lucky we might get a few jurisdictions this calendar year."

Plans are also underway to expand the capability beyond the FVS. The FVS offers only 1:1 matching of faces. However, a Face Identification Service (FIS) will allow one to many matching - for example ascertaining the ID of an unknown individual based purely on an image of their face.
