Telcos can play a very important role in the Indonesian Internet of Things (IoT) world and can become end-to-end solutions for IoT services, according to Arifa Febriyanti, Head of Internet of Things, XL Axiata.

Febriyanti made this point at the recently held panel session at the Jakarta Smart City Lounge.

Key leaders driving the IoT and smart city initiatives in Indonesia provided inputs on the current progress and sharing efforts to be taken on further.

It was noted that using an IoT solution is easy because the telcos who take part as a solution provider for IoT can provide the total end-to-end service to the end user.

Development of IoT market

Local telecommunications companies in Indonesia have joined hands with the government to develop the IoT/M2M market.

One such company is Indosat Ooredoo that has a mobile penetration rate of 120 percent in Indonesia.

Indosat Ooredoo, one of the participants in this panel discussion believe that CSPs (communication service providers) are trusted partners to help IoT adoption.

These CSPs are in the driver seat, and can lead the IoT development through an extensive portfolio of solutions and services.

"We have done a lot of market educations in the last 2 years and this year we will continue to accelerate growth in banking, transportation and security, plus develop new markets in eHealth, user based insurance, business applications, Industrial IoT, oil gas, Smart Cities," said Hendra Sumiarsa, Head of Machine-to-Machine, Indosat Ooredoo.
